Round baskets are the simplest shape of basket to learn as a beginner. Spend the day learning with Jilly Greig, a professional basket weaver from East Lothian, and go home with an amazingly useful and beautiful basket to be admired by all and used for a multitude of things in the home.
Jilly will explain about the different types of willow, its preparation and various characteristics. She will help you weave a round basket base, the beginnings of any round basket, so a good thing to learn if you would like to progress to other styles like fruit baskets, log baskets and asymmetrics.
You will learn a simple pairing weave to construct the base, then insert the uprights and bring them up to form a frame to weave the sides of the basket round. We will be using a waling weave to form the sides, then learn how to lay down a three behind one rod border to finish off your basket beautifully.
If you have already made a berry basket with me, a round basket can be the perfect thing to practice a randing weave on. Beginners can keep to the waling, or may decide they feel confident enough to try the randing too.
All material and use of tools included, along with tea, coffee and homemade cake.
Bring and old sheet or large towel to wrap your basket in over the lunch break and your willow while working.
